Here in the Midwest we have corn. A TON of corn. Oh, and soybeans too. Bushels of them as well. But for you who live in the NYC area, our Delta is going to make sure you know how much they LOVE you! Take a a look at this new promo video on youtube just for you all:

And, there is a fare sale going on to help you decide to choose Delta next time you fly! It has been a few weeks since I was on a Delta jet and I am starting to feel the itch. I may just have to look at booking a fall trip somewhere to tide me over for a while! – René

A little DeltaPoints blog housekeeping and Q&A

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

I get tons of emails each day. I try to answer right away as if I do not, the volume that comes in causes me to not get back again to older ones I hate to admit. I do appreciate reader emails and thank you for questions, blog ideas and what ever else Delta is on your mind. I do get many of the same questions and wanted to clear a few things up.

Q) Why can I not comment anymore on old posts?

A) I get digital floods of spam comments each and every day. The longer any post is up, the more and more spam comments hit the post and after a while it gets just ridiculous. For every “real” comment I have dozens of spam over time. So, I can pick to have comments close after 7 or 14 day or longer to cut down on this. I have chosen to let readers have 1 week to comment on posts. Is that too short? Maybe but something had to be done due to the volume of spam.

Q) Do you blog about all deals and tips you find? What about all this talk about keeping deals private and the risk of killing deals when all the blogs cover them?

A) I will blog about anything anyone can duplicate. While I hope my post does not kill a deal, keeping a deal secret so only a few have a chance to get it I don’t feel is the best way to go. If I find out about it and can show you how to do it I will as I have stated before. In fact, I think we should use technology to spread the information EVEN FASTER (I will blog about this idea soon). However, there are some places I do agree with the hard core points junkies, there are some things only for DO’s. What are they? Ideas that you may or may not get points or even worse you may get zero and just have the cost for the attempt. Or, there may be ideas that are outside the T&C of the program and thus you again you may get points or you may not!

Q) Why don’t you just talk about Delta since that is your blog focus.

A) Since I started the blog, I have always said I will talk about any deal I think is worth your time. The SW Air ones for example. I hope to never fly SW Air, but that does not mean they are not a good airline and have good deals. So, while I try to always have Delta related posts, some days may feature a hotel or another airline or whatever.

Q) Where do you get all the stuff you giveaway on the blog? Do you accept gifts and trips from companies to promote their products?

A) Some of the stuff I get, like the April GoGo swag, I either will ask for or am offered to giveaway on the blog. I do not get payment or credit for this type of “stuff”. I do not get free nights or trips to promote anything. I do not and will not accept free trips, offered only to me, to then promote something on the blog. I blog about what I use and pay for or use on points etc. Some of the stuff I giveaway I pay for out of my pocket or I get for free from points or other ways. I make between $5 to $25 a month off of Amazon from the blog links and buy stuff to give away with those funds. I get a few bucks from Ebates as well and can buy fun things to “give back” to the blog. Either way, I am not “beholden” to any company for anything I write about nor would I accept such a deal. Now if some hotel or airline were to offer me points to giveaway to readers to put up a post about them, that I would think about doing as it would benefit readers! Obviously I do get credit from points cards (thanks for supporting the blog btw) but I also have and use or have had just about all of them at some point as well.

Q) Why do you make it so hard to understand some of the deals and speak in code half the time?

A) This is a great question. It is so very hard to blog with a rookie and an experienced Diamond Medallion flyer in mind each day. I try to find a balance but some concepts will take some study for newer readers and other ideas will just bore a million miler. I hope I find a good balance and mix as I do really try to do this. As to speaking in code, I have in my Essentials tab, under E12, a shortcut for terms. I am sorry if you feel frustrated by abbreviations, but try not to allow this to get to you. Soon you to will be calling airports by their 3 letter code rather than their real name as well!

So I hope this little Q&A is helpful to readers. I sure appreciate the privilege of blogging and it just makes my day when I can help a reader enjoy trips the way my wife and I do or save a few bucks one way or another! – Rene

PS – get ready for some exciting news on the way tomorrow!

Delta NEWS & a 747 tries to fly without engines?

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

It has been a while since I popped up a Delta NEWS day post and there has been a bunch going on. Some of these you may have seen, some you may have missed.

This first one is a youtube clip of a 747 that seems to want to fly without engines. It is a bit LOUD so you may want to check your sound setting BEFORE you click on it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHhZwvdRR5c

  • EC – Economy Comfort priced tickets have begun as you can see HERE
  • Note to self, pole vaulters should ship equipment via Fedex and get extra Skymiles
  • BTW – on the topic of extra Skymiles – look at the bottom of the LINKS tab for even more FREE Skymiles
  • As I have blogged about before, Delta wants to dump the CRJ 50 seat planes and the 717’s will help do just that
  • Overhead bins on Delta jets are getting bigger so that is nice
  • DAL share price was around $10 in Jan and look where it is now HERE
  • Lower OIL is great news for Delta flying and mfg jet fuel HERE
  • There will be more ATL-AMS flights per day soon
  • Delta rules the roost in MSP as we see HERE
  • There are two target promos that almost no one will get HERE and HERE

So that is it for May’s news. Just think, in one month 2012 is half over! How many MQM’s have you racked up so far? Are you on pace to reach your Medallion level goal?  You can always look at the post from Jan 1st for help! – René

60,000 POINT CitiBank Thank You Premier card!

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

I found a (deal is now DEAD) Best deal is the 50, 000 point link (50k deal dead now too) now (also NOT my link btw)  working 60,000 Point CitiBank Thank You card link (note this is NOT my link)! It is clearly better than the 25,000 one I can offer. This one seems only to be valid until June 14th but these kinds of offers can disappear quickly as we all know. You do have to spend $4000 to get all the points but if you are thinking about a round, this would be a good one to look at.

Maybe to round out your round you could look at:

Delta GOLD from American Express 30,000 point card after $500 spend

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card 40,000 points

A nice 130,000 point round after spending $7500. Oh how I long for the days when we could get this many points for spending just ONE dollar! – René

Some highlights from Delta’s 2011 Corporate Responsibility Report

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

The other day I was reading through the  2011 Corporate Responsibility Report  (I know, who does this right?), and found some interesting bits of information inside.

Also, DeltaPoints readers are a unique group and I make no secret I am slanted to the “Pro” Delta side and will tend to give Delta the benefit of the doubt when issues are not black & white. I will call Delta out when they are in the wrong or I feel they are not responding to proper concerns. So what about the aforementioned report?

  • Did you know that many times when you call a Delta rep, they may be at home? Check out page 10 that says:

“The Work@Home program permits eligible employees who work in a call center environment to set up a virtual office with the appropriate computer and telephonic equipment and work at home 100% of the time.”

So if you ever hear in the background a child, dog or cat and think it was bring your kid to work day, they may just be working from home today :-)

  • The rules are the rules. As travel  hackers  enthusiasts, we do tend to look for ways to get that free upgrade or better deal or whatever. In the old days there were “ways” to work around certain road blocks if you knew what to ask a rep for. But Delta “IT” has been very efficient at closing many of them down. Also, if reps seem less willing to help out, this may be why on page 14:

“Delta employees are incentivized by overall company performance. Employees earn more when Delta performs well through our annual Profit sharing program and monthly Shared rewards program”…. “Eligible employees can earn a monthly cash bonus when we meet or exceed established goals.”

So as enthusiasts, we need to think about either ways to ask for, or ways they can do things, that will not affect the above or be tracked back to them by the mighty “hand of IT”.

  • One of my favorite jokes I tell a bunch is the word you never ever want to hear after a really good nap. That word is “CLEAR“! But on page 17 we see:

“Ground employees, customers and passengers benefit from Delta ground and aircraft automated external defibrillator programs. Flight attendants receive new hire and biennial CPR and automated external defibrillator training. In 2011, fight attendants used automated external defibrillators on more than 60 occasions”

Wow! Next time we see an FA having a hard day, or maybe not as nice as we would like, maybe, just maybe, we can think of the time they spend in training to save our life if need be. Thank you Delta and staff for going the extra mile!

  • One little “beef” I have with Delta management is “downsizing” of the “job well done” certs in the Platinum and Diamond packs each year. You know, in the spirit of pay it forward, on page 18 I learned that top employees can earn:

“the Chairman’s Club is Delta’s most prestigious corporate recognition program. This program honors employees who consistently demonstrate dedication and determination to the highest standards of service to Delta customers, coworkers and communities served.”

I have never heard of this award but I bet employees know all about it. So here is what I am going to do. I have made up my own “thank you card” you can download  HERE,  then fold into a card (½ and then ½ again). The corresponding sized envelope is  this size. I tend to buy AMEX gift cards (there are some nice codes to get them FEE FREE if you Google around) to extend the time I have to pay off some of these new uber-spend cards I churn.

I am going to buy a few $25 AMEX thank you cards and when an employee treats me with the “highest standards of service to Delta customers” I am going to give them one! Why not download the thank you card and see what you think.

There were also some other bits like the focus on WiFi, new seats etc. to improve customer satisfaction. I agree we love these improvements, we just want them faster faster faster! I have been up in the air a bunch this year and am impressed with our airline. I think the employees are doing all they can to show off our airline’s best face; let’s hope management does the same and shows they also appreciate us as well! – René

$20 off SW Air ticket part two + 750 Rapid Rewards points

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

I promise to let this one go but this deal keeps getting better and better. I blogged about this before and gave away the 100 points / $20 code I had saved up from my Coke purchases. But I missed an important part. Check this out:

So, if you don’t yet have a Rapid Rewards account, or say someone in your family (like your grandma, granddad, cousin, uncle, aunt, etc.) does not yet have one, they can get Coke Rewards points in the form of a Coke code worth 60 points and  up to 750 AW Air Rapid Rewards points.  ANYONE can redeem only  ONE  of these codes. If you already have a Rapid Rewards account you could use the code from someone else.

To get the extra 40 points all you have to do is buy a few cases of soda (2×24 case would work),  and then redeem them for the $20 off SW Air certificate.

I signed my mom up for a SW Air account under the deal. I doubt she will ever fly SW Air, but the Rapid Rewards account is free and I did get the code for the 60 Coke Rewards points plus had a few extra so I redeemed another $20 SW Air code.

To win the code, all you have to do is tell me how you first found DeltaPoints.com. I really want to know! Was it from BA or FT or another blog or a Google search? Where? – René

Are airlines points becoming “Company Scrip” or are they already?

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

A bit before any of us, or anyone for that matter, were flying airplanes and collecting points there was a form of currency called Company Scrip. There was generally a company store, the only place where one could redeem the “money” printed by the company for merchandise.

There is so much dirty about this, but the basic gist is that the company decides what things cost and what you can buy and when you got paid. Does any of this sound familiar to you yet as a collector of points?

To me, airline miles are truly the new form of company scrip. Think about this. One of our main, and most frustrating gripes about our dear airline, is ability to redeem points the way we want. Delta tells us what a ticket costs in miles from point A to B. They tell us where we can fly and will award us miles as they see fit under whatever terms they want.

You may be saying, but this is just a silly comparison. We have a choice of airlines. Do you? Many readers are “Hub Captives” and have no real choice other than Delta. Much like the old days when you were free to go somewhere else if you could find a new place to live, work and on and on.

And then we go to the value of a Skymile. What is it? Do you know? You may have a number in your mind of what a point is worth to you – I know I do. In the old days of company scrip:

“Workers wishing to convert their scrip to cash generally had to do so at a discount.”

For us today, if we want to BUY Skymiles they cost 3.5 cents per mile plus fees. Also keep in mind, if we earn, buy or by what ever means amass points and tickets, at any time, Delta may suspend our accounts and even potentially revoke our award tickets!

If we have the CCC that is the “company currency converter”, a DELTA AMEX card, we can redeem the points at a discounted rate of 1 cent per point when buying a ticket and that can have some real value. But, if we plan to buy company merchandise, at the company store, the discount rate is much worse. For example if we want to buy a Kindle from the company store, the value of a Skymile goes down to just ½ a cent per point since you can obviously buy a new Kindle for $200 cash.

So is there a point to this post? Yes. We are all just a tiny bit obsessive over points and rightly so when we look at the places we get to go with our points. But at the same time, whenever we make choices to buy or fly or earn, let’s keep our wits about us and always remember we are ultimately getting paid with company money and it is worth whatever they say it is! – Rene

Shopping portals and a follow-up on my Snow Blower points

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

If you are new to the world of blogs, boards and frequent flyer miles, you may not be aware of the virtual blizzard of points that can come from credit card sign up deals. I hope you will take the time to read my “Rookie” tab to learn more.

If you are not in the category above, and are already churning cards, then you are looking at ways to get every single point, mile or cash back you can find.

This week many in the blogosphere like FTG & Gary have been talking about shopping portals and which one is the best one to use. Without a doubt, we should all start our search at EVRewards.com to find the best deals going. But, I have some words of warning. All portals are not created equal. Let me give you an example. Our Delta shopping site is run by “Cartera Commerce” and if you search for them and miles you will find many have had issues with them in the past. What I have found is they often do not issue the points until you e-mail and complain about the missing points. They do tend to then give you what you are owed, but it is frustrating that you have to follow up to get what you should. I got a snow blower via their site ( and Lowes ) back in March. I waited patiently the 45 days after purchase and e-mailed as no points had arrived. About a week later points are in my Skymiles account!

I have been very impressed with the Chase Ultimate Rewards shopping portal and Chase is just tops when you have an issue about not just making it right but even offering MORE points to show they are sorry about the fact that YOU had to contact them about the error.

So back to the flavor of the day the new Top Cash Back site. I have not used them yet. My go-to site has been for YEARS and remains  Ebates.com (my link btw). They do not always offer the best rewards and I will use the Skymiles shopping site when the deal is good or the Chase as much as I can, but for reliability Ebates is second to none. Other than Officemax, that tends to never report a sale to ANY of the shopping sites, I rarely have an issue with credits not posting FAST to my Ebates account. If I ever do find something missing, they give you credit INSTANTLY while they look into it. No one else does this. This is worth a ton to me.

I have a “head” for points and tend to, in a weird way, remember all the things I should get points for. Some I miss but I check for most. But it should not have to be that much work to get what we are due. So always check for the best deal, and then go with the sites you trust most to give you the points due! – René
