Did you know travel agents don’t get paid for booking DELTA tickets? + free Drinks!

I have a friend who is a travel agent. I was shocked to learn that years ago the terms from all the airlines changed and they are not paid anything by the airlines for booking tickets. So think about that if you use their service and see a small charge. Now this is not the case outside the USA. There, agents can get paid.

Why bring this up? I was doing some research and I came across the travel part of Delta’s web site call World Agent Direct.

click on the photo to go to the site

Without actually being a travel agent you have limited access to the site and many of the links simply toss you back to the proper DELTA.com site. The AF site has almost nothing without access codes. But, in typical Italian style, there is a ton of info wide open on their site as you can see.

Anyway – not much info here that will apply to us as day to day Delta travelers but I thought it would be fun to see what is out on the web when you know where to look! – René

Reader question – should I transfer points from Membership Rewards or SPG? + Skyclub pass

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

This is a great question. There is only one time when the answer is simple and black & white. If, for whatever reason like starting your 24 month new card bonus clock, you are going to close all your Membership Rewards cards (or one going to a single account), you MUST get the points out first or they will be lost forever! End of story. Also if you are ever targeted with the AMEX Financial Review it may be wise to move the points out as if you do not “win” the review, the points will be gone, but you can move them out during the process.

If you are not going to close the card then there should be no “pressing” reason to move your points anywhere else.  Many times during each year there are good bonuses of 30-50% for sending them to many airlines. Now if you are short some miles and want to book seats right now, that is also a good reason to transfer some, but not more, than you need now. I have done very well with this card as the $200 airline incidentals credit, $100 towards GOES, lounge access and more + 25,000 points is a very good value and should be a card to include in your next card round if you are planning on one soon.

The same thing goes most of the time with the SPG points earned from either the personal or the business flavor of the cards.Your SPG points will NOT go away if you cancel your SPG AMEX card. However, SPG points do expire if you do not have activity in the account, like a stay. You can also every month take advantage of the audience reward trivia and get 10 free points to keep the account alive as now any activity counts!  The answers are even provided here at MilePoint in this thread. So no rush to get those miles out until you need them.

Lastly with SPG it is important to remember the bonus they give you. For every 20,000 you transfer to an airline, they give you 5,000 bonus miles so you net out 25,000 at the other end. This is a great value and one of the reasons SPG points are so good. So I hope that covers the question asked and feel free to shoot off any more if this is not clear. – René

Also, to end the month on a high note, let me know if you have a MR or SPG card,  plus if you want to brag, tell us your credit score, or just tell us you are working on getting it back up again to be able to apply for cards, and you will have a chance to win ONE – FREE DAY PASS to any DELTA SKYCLUB!

Neither answer will increase your chance to win btw.

So we fly Delta – how will the new law affect the way we look at price per ticket?

from the Spirit Web site

Boy has the new rule made a ton of people or  companys  either mad or  happy. Now I have never ever been on a Spirit plane nor do I ever plan on ever getting on one. I hate that they charge more than Ryan air even does for everything. I bet if they had the oxygen mask deployed in an emergency situation, they would ask for your credit card “before you assisted someone else traveling with you!”

I decided to jump on Delta and see what a trip to see my mom in Sweden would price out at and look what I found:

Wow only $223 round trip South Bend to Gothenburg Sweden! Really? But is Delta doing a “Spirit Air” move and hiding income in the cost breakdown? Look at the International Surcharge line. That is not a “tax”. This goes to Delta to cover fuel costs.  Hummm… And Delta many times accuses us “travel hackers” of gaming the system?

Every single day I see more and more reasons to collect points and the value of points. And when noted travel advocates are telling people points are worthless or worse  it make me even more happy that you and I get this game and will be “turning left” as we enter the plane for our next flight hopefully for FREE! – René

Have you noticed Delta Air Lines gate agents are starting to really enforce “SizeCheck” rules?

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

If we look at the Delta.com web site we see the following SizeCheck rules (the old SizeWise btw)

  • For carry-on bags your bag must:
  • Not exceed 45 inches (length+width+height), or 115 cm.
  • Fit easily in our SizeCheck® unit (approximately 22″x14″x9″, or 56x36x23 cm).
  • Fit in an overhead bin or underneath the seat in front of you.

With checked bag prices going up year by year, and waiting for bags can take a long time, and if you have a tight connection you may make it but your bags might not – what is a Delta traveler to do? Also, if your bag is too big with flights always going out full, gate agents are more and more frequently enforcing the SizeCheck to make sure your bag can go on-board!

My bride and I have his and hers of this little puppy. The Traveler’s Choice Rome 21″ Hardside Rolling Carry-On Upright (my link to Amazon btw). It is outside the “official” regulation size from Delta but does fit inside the “SizeCheck” metal box at the boarding gates as you can see below. On the CRJ-100/200’s you can fit ONE under the seat but not TWO! It is very light and it is shocking just how much you can fit inside these little guys. The wheels are quiet and roller blade style. The handle is strong and sturdy.

The way we do trips with this is I have my laptop backpack and my wife has her “big” purse. Now I am not telling everyone to go get this bag and that it is the best one ever. For a bag under $50 it works great for us. Either way, it seems that Delta is going to more and more enforce the carry-on bag size rules and if you want to avoid having to check your bag, this kind of bag is one you will want to seriously start to look into!- René

Delta Air Lines 1.2 Billion profit in 2011. What stood out to me? Aircraft maintenance!

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

Have you had a chance to read over the new press release from Delta Air Lines about earnings for 2011? Did anything stand out to you? One thing did for me. Look at the part highlighted below:

This one line does not tell the whole story of where the cost savings came from. But it made think back to this Frontline piece about outsourcing aircraft maintenance:

Delta aircraft are aging fast. The new seat improvements are great and it does bring “new life” to the older planes since the average age is now 15+ years according to the Delta web site. Some 767 & MD’s are over 20+ year old now.

But these kinds of improvements are not the same as new planes. With an older fleet maintenance should be a priority I would think. Can Delta make it a priority and also save money? As we see in the report Delta is saving money and the stock price was up over 6% yesterday. Time will tell if this is a good choice or not.

What do you all think?  Do you ever worry about maintenance? I would love to hear what you think about this! – René

Mark A. – January 25, 2012 at 3:41 pm

If they don’t tell me at the front desk I’ve been upgraded, I’ve asked about large meeting halls in the area and tell them I’m looking for a place to hold a regional meeting and need lodging also. They usually put me on a top floor after that, to bait me in. It’s all business expenses for me, so I’m not really out anything. It also lets me get a feel for the area, which is a better indicator than just calling places.

Congratulations Mark and thanks for helping out! – René

Reader questions – how I request an upgrade for a hotel stay? + Sony Noise Canceling Headphones

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

One of DeltaPoints.com readers asks:

1) Exactly who do I call or e-mail? The hotel directly? or the dedicated Gold [elite] reservation line?

2) What wording should I use when asking for the upgrade? I assume that I won’t need to do some song and dance about how it is a special occasion that merits a Room Upgrade. What if I want a Deluxe Room or Suite with a view? Any special way to schmooze the hotel for that?

3) What if the hotel says they don’t have any Upgrade Rooms available? Should I expect any compensation other than an apology? Should I complain nicely?

Wow great questions. Now I am not a “hotel blogger” and freely admit there are other BoardingArea.com writers so much better than me. So take this as what I do and maybe try some of the ideas that seem to work for me.

Q1) In the past I always faxed my request. You can do that by using FaxZero for free. But sometimes the right person does not get the request and it is just one way communication. So, for my last few stays I e-mail and that has worked. You get two way conversation and can print out what you were promised. I do not work with the elite line as most of the time it is up to the hotel to grant the upgrades.

Q2) I would NOT cut-n-paste this, but here is basically what I say:

“My wife and I are very much looking forward to our stay at your location 01JAN2012 confirmations # 007. As a loyal [insert elite level here] member I would very much appreciate a suite upgrade if one can be extended to us. Thank you for your time and we will see you soon. Sincerely [your name].

So now you get the idea. I never ask about special events so I have no idea if that even helps. It may or may not. Perhaps some readers can give some feedback if they have tried that route. If you want more that what you are given (do get something for free first btw), then ask what the up-charge would be to the presidential suite or whatever you want. If it is outside your budget respectfully decline and thank them for the promised upgrade.

Q3) With some chains you are guaranteed upgrades. With Priority Club you are not when using points but I have found I almost always get them when I do the above. If they say sold out or no dice, you can always try twittering the hotel and saying as an elite you were really hoping for an upgrade but the location does not seem to be very helpful. Is there anything they can do. Many times you get a quick answer back that all of a sudden a room has opened up. Try it! – René

 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

Now I want to help this reader out. So, how about this – I want you to tell me what you have done (other than fax and e-mail or tweeting) that has WORKED to get you an upgrade for a chance to win these NEW SONY headphones!

Just a comment will not qualify – you need to help the reader out to win!

With all the changes should not DAL (Delta) stock price go up up up?

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

First – I am not a stock guru. This post is NOT a suggestion in any possible way to buy DAL stock or any other stock. Also I know there is more to stock prices than what is to follow!

So what is this. This is my day to gripe a bit about my beloved airline that I do really like. Delta does a bunch right but as a medallion, we have taken it on the chin a bunch in 2011. And not just medallions. What am I most “soap boxing” about then? Let’s start with bumps. “IT” at Delta has been great at fixing things that cost the airline money. For example, in the past, if you got a bump, you would be re-booked in Y or A class most of the time. So, you got some extra points, free upgrades many times, and some extra MQM’s. A great perk to make you want to give up your seat. On those rare days you could take two bumps back to back you could rack up a nice sum of “delta dollars” and use a ton of them all on one ticket to fly somewhere nice. As we who read, DeltaPoints.com all know, not any more. If you want to see the new verbiage it is spelled out by the T&C of the one I got on my last trip.

Should I be complaining about free money from Delta? I think so. Why? Because any more changes and Delta Dollars may soon become Delta Pesos. We do not need more exchange rate comparisons.

Now not just this rule, but the others are making me a bit crazy. The no-change inside 72 hours of flight for skymiles tickets and it’s many changes still makes my blood boil as well as many other medallions. So here is the point to today’s post. If all these changes are to make such a huge impact on the company’s bottom line (as the company says), should not the stock price reflect that? Some say it takes time to show in the stock. But what stock gurus say is that a stock price reflects what the market thinks a stock will do in the next 6 months so the price shows that. Look at the DAL chart for the past few years:

Now in Feb. of 2009 DAL was all the way down to $5 range. April 2010 back up to $15. Then in Aug. for 2011, at the time all the T-72 changes were happening, down to $7. Today DAL is under $10 and will announce earnings this week talked about HERE and HERE.

So maybe charging for everything, sticking us with every fee they can, devaluing the skymiles in regards to flying BE to Hawaii, making Silver Medallion worth less than before, and the things talked about above will make DAL more money. So check back next year this time. If DAL is at $20 a share, I guess making us all crazy worked. If it is back at $5 range – maybe not so much! – René
