A nice deal on a LIGHT color 7″ e-Reader !?

I have two of these for when we fly, one for my wife and one for me. I do recommend them and like them very much. Please know it is an e-Reader not much more. Yes it plays mp3’s, mp4 video’etc. But don’t buy it for anything but a nice e-Reader or you will be disappointed. Why? The CPU is a single core 800mhz. Yes it has WiFi and you can run the Dolphin web browser & e-mail.

But here is why I like it. It weighs about ½ what an iPad weights. Mine is just over 350 grams. The battery is about 6 hrs on a full charge with WiFi off and you can run it with black background and white text for night time reading. It comes stock with Barns & Nobles e-Reader software that I think works the best.

If you want to get the best price, I mean under $70 after cash back, start with my eBates link below. We both get $5 when you setup an account and make a purchase.

eBates cash back site

Next step is search for Kmart and click shop. With this you will get 6% cash back + your $5 bonus (or $10 B&N card if you want that – I like cash).

Next step at Kmart search for Pandigital and you will see the Pandigital 7″ Android Multimedia Tablet and Color eReader – R70F200

I would place the order online (for in store PICK UP – pick your local store)  and then print your receipt and go pickup at your local store. Also this way you can return it if you don’t like it as much as I do! I would act fast as it is out of stock around my area already.

So there you are – if you want a very light weight 7″ color eReader – look at this one.

Now the “art” of complaining for free skymiles

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

Delta is a big airline. I mean really big!  Thus, if they can simply give us some miles or DELTA money to “go away”,  they often will. So what exactly am I talking about? Well, what if something went wrong with your “travel experience” on DELTA? Guess what, you can expect to “enjoy” either miles or delta $$$. What do you mean something went wrong? Like what?

Lets say you taxi for 30 min in ATL, that happens all the time right, but the a/c on the flight does not work for some reason while you were on the ground. Getting sweaty before a long trip is not much fun is it. Or, the video does not work in your seat. Or, they run out of your meal of choice. Or, they scuff your bag via plane side check. Or, the bath room on the CRJ is a mess. Or, well you get the idea here.

So how does one complain the best way to be compensated with points or ETV’s? For me, the best way is simply “NOT” to complain. Wait – say what? No really, do it kinda like this(do not cut-n-paste please):

“I just wanted to drop a note to say how great everyone I interacted at with DELTA was on my last trip confirmation # xxxx. Also, you may want to alert maintenance to look at dlxxx as the cargo hold must be just covered in motor oil because it ended up all over my brand new leather computer bag I plane side checked. Now, most of it came off using the soap and towels in the DTW SKYCLUB, so I think I am OK. Many thanks for being such a great airline for me and my family whenever I choose to travel”!

I hope you see my point. Remember reps sit all day, somewhere, reading way too many long rants that they either just pass on or get sick of and cut-n-paste 1 of 100 stock go-away answers to you and you get nothing for your “issue” whatever it was . But we LOVE our airline. We want to make it a better airline. So, DELTA will reward us for the helping them if we use SHORT emails like this (most of the time anyway!).

Have a Comment or Complaint? – DELTA site

So next fight see how many free miles you get and let me know how it works out :-)

….and so you all don’t complain about my blog, here are 2 more free drink/snack coupons for DELTA good until 31DEC2012 – just comment below(by 10PM EST) and I will randomly pick a winner and get them in the mail to you!

Are you making the most out of DELTA.com?

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

Weekends are time to relax but also time to make sure you are getting the most out of your DELTA partnership you can. Web sites are built by geeks like me (well sorta like me anyway). Us geeks think geek. We think the way we make something is simple, clear and logical. Then a user try’s it and says, “that is so dumb, why did they do it this way?”. In some ways DELTA.com is clean and nice, in other ways not so much.

So today let’s look at a part of the DELTA web site you may never have seen. Your “manage my account” page:

As you can see this page has lots of links for you to play with and update and I hope you take the time to do just that including passport and credit card info.

But what I want to focus on is what is in it for you today. Please look at the VIEW YOUR PROMOTIONS link.

Here you will see I have at least one promotion I have yet to register for. Some of them you will never ever fly. But register for all of them. With DELTA “IT” you never know when some flight might just give you an extra 5000 or 25000 skymiles! And, many times you will find there are some good promotions you can take advantage of.

So today is short but sweet. Take some time and get to know DELTA web site – René

More free stuff! Today I am giving away a dual time zone watch to a random comment so just say hello or anything (by 10PM EST) about the blog below for a chance to win.

Learn how to book DELTA LOW LEVEL seats to Europe & beyond even summer!

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

Today we look at award booking. One of the reasons I love DELTA is how simple it is to collect a ton of miles. The reason most dislike DELTA is their hopelessly broken DELTA.com web site to search for free tickets. Many in the frequent flyer community call it DELTA.dumb. Why? Let’s say I want to visit my mom in Sweden. I would like to fly from Kalamazoo MI (AZO) to Gothenburg Sweden (GOT). Let’s see what I find on July 4th this summer in BUSINESS CLASS?

Ugh – 245,000 miles per person. Yuk.

But, look at this. If I first search AZO-ORD in coach I find low level seats 25,000.

Next I look for seats from ORD-GOT in business I find low level seats for 100,000!

We need to understand the rules and that we can have up to 5 legs each way as a “legal” routing. So, with the above info in hand, if I call DELTA and they put this into one trip, it will cost me just 100,000 all-in for the trip.

Now I really don’t want to fly 5:40 AM from Kalamazoo to Chicago via Detroit (DTW) in coach before I fly business the rest of the way to Sweden. But, I bet you missed the best part in the photo’s above. Notice we only have a 33 min connection in DTW! The minimum legal connection is 30 min. Why is this a good thing?

THE MIGHTY Schedule change rule!

That far out, and with regional airline partners, schedules change all the time! Once that happens and you can not make your connection the “miles requirement” for your frequent flyer ticket goes out the window. Then, we can simply ask for the flights that would have cost 245,000 and avoid ORD all together! Now there are times this does not work and you may have to fly some crazy routes but when that happens I just look at is as extra “bumportunities” or a chance to give up my seat for DELTA $$$ or ETV’s towards my next trip.

Crazy, sure, but it works! BTW you must do this searching for a one way trip. Then the same on the dates for the way back home. It takes some time and work on your part and then phone time with a few reps but worth it for the points savings! There you have it. You now know the way to get low level seats in business class to Europe on DELTA in the middle of summer.

Get 500 free DELTA miles in no time when you pick DELTA as your program here:

(let’s see that’s 1500 free points for the last 3 days – not too bad!)

What are MQM’s? The secret about DELTA status

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

I think blogs should be informative, witty and entertaining. Today I will try to do at least 1 of these 3.

If you are new to DELTA, let me explain status. If you don’t have it – get it. DELTA airlines likes loves those with status. The 4 status tiers with our airline and they are these:

  • Silver Medallion if you achieve 25,000 MQM’s – SM or FO
  • Gold Medallion if you achieve 50,000 MQM’s – GM
  • Platinum Medallion if you achieve 75,000 MQM’s – PM
  • Diamond Medallion if you achieve 125,000 MQM’s -DM

MQM officially stands for Medallion Qualifying Miles or BIS (your butt in the airplane seat). Now even seasoned DELTA flyers may not know a secret about this. The above are not the “real” DELTA names for status flyers! No, they are code names. The code name for Medallion is….. MONEY! So, what MQM really stands for is MONEY qualifying Miles. Look at it this way:

  • SM = Sorta Money – We like you, sorta. You are on our radar, just a little.
  • GM = Generating Money – Hello there! You are kinda cute. Let’s make you pretty!
  • PM = Printing Money – You are our bread and butter. Name that tune we sing it.
  • DM = Definitely Money – True love. We answer the phone before you even dial!

So now that you know the secret code words, it becomes clear why “DELTA loves ya baby” and why it is worth getting Medallion status. How do you get status and what do you get. Here is a link to read about goodies:

How do I get it? There are lot’s of ways, some cheap, some a bit costly but well worth it (I will cover how to best do this in a later blog post). A DM can “gift” anyone they want GM for a year (your new best friend). PM can gift SM. AMEX gives 10,000 “MoneyQM’s” for a fee when you get their Delta Reserve Personal or Business cards.. The only other way is FLY. The best way is to use a bump voucher from DELTA and then fly somewhere very far away (& back) on their money. This time of the year you will hear stories of mileage runs, that is flying purely to earn MQM’s. 2 years ago, this week, I flew to Texas and back the same day for $145 to push me over the top to make PM. Worth every penny for all I got back! Also for a limited time you can BUY up to 10,000 MQM at DELTA here!

So why should you push for status? When I call DELTA, 95% of the time they answer on the 1st ring. They are kind and use my name. They have all my flights up instantly and will do almost anything they can to help me, even when the rules say no. From free bags to no lines at check-in and on and on. All the things you hate about flying – I don’t have to do.

So if you are going to fly DELTA – get MONEY status. You will like it! – René

Also I am giving away 2 free drink/snack coupons for DELTA good until 31DEC2012 – just comment below(by 10PM EST) on what you think of my blog so far and I will randomly pick a winner and get them in the mail to you!

A nice free treat for GM,PM & DM flyers domestic and PM & DM international.  I think it is worth it on very long flights.

Do note that drinks are NOT free on domestic segments but most Medallion flyers will get a “have one on us coupon”.

I hope you enjoy and benefit from my Blog!

So why am I Blogging? I feel there is a need, and I hope I can help you my reader. My focus will be mostly on DELTA airlines tips and hints but I will post anything that I feel you will like that is travel related.

So what motivated me to blog? Like most of us who collect points, few of our friends “get” how we do what we do. On my recent trip from AMS-DTW my wife & I sat in business class on a DELTA 767 and watched all the folks in coach stream by as we sipped champagne with seats reclined & foot rests out (yes they loaded from the front door). One of the people walked by and said:

“Before I die I want to take a trip like that!”

I smiled and said,

“Read the  frugaltravelguy.com  web site and you can.”
(thanks Rick for all you do!)

Our friends, family & others just don’t get it. I want them to understand. I don’t travel for business. I mostly fly to see family in Sweden and for such a long trip I want to fly “in front of the curtain” and I want to do it for free. Guess what, if you are reading this you can too, and as the Frugal Travel Guy says, at prices we can afford!

So why should you read my blog? What credentials do I have to make reading my words worth your time? For 10+ years I have flown NWA / DELTA airlines. I know a few tips to make your life with DELTA better and smoother. Also, right now, my wife’s & my total “points” accounts are more than 2 million. Both of us currently hold Platinum Medallion status with DELTA and have booked 6 trips for 2012 in addition to our current point totals. One of them is in Lufthansa 1st class (270,000 miles – 2x 135,000) and one is in DELTA business (200,000 miles 2x -100,000) to Sweden. Also, 2 ski trips to Salt Lake and 2 trips to Florida for my wife and some good friends (fun to spend points on those you love and care about). All these trips are either free on points or ETV’s (electronic travel vouchers).

Flight, hotels, cars & more can all be free (or almost free) for you too! Read my blog each day and I will help to guide you to enjoy the same ride.

Yours – René – deltagoldflyer

PS – I will end with the most important tip you MUST never – ever – forget. When communicating with an airline, hotel or whatever, but especially DELTA, if you don’t like the answer, HANG UP, call back, and ask again (or tweet again and again). People don’t know their jobs today. They don’t know the rules. They don’t know their partners’ rules. Call back and the next rep might know the rules or may even waive the rules if you ask nice. (OK you get 2 tips today – always be super nice and thank the reps for what they do! It helps.)

….. And now to close with 1500 free DELTA points (some states).
Get them HERE!
