25,000 SKYMILES for $500 spending coming soon + 2 FREE DELTA drink coupons!

EDIT: JUST GOT WORD the deal will be LIVE tomorrow but limited to first 1000 orders!

I will post tonight about the final details and what I will be doing.

It is going to be great.

————————————————

How would you like earn a free domestic low level award ticket for every $500 you spend at Skymall? Skymall ran this promotion back in September this year and I collected a cool ¼ million skymiles for an all-in cost of just $700.

How did I do this? If you purchased at least $500 on one invoice, withing 8 weeks, you will be credited 25,000 skymiles for the purchase. You could do this as much as you wanted.

Now since a coach class ticket to Europe costs just under $1000 (depending on where you are going) you can see what a deal this can be. For two purchases / invoices you get 50,000 miles that is just short of a free low level ticket to Europe. If you make 4 purchases / invoices then you earn 100,000 miles or enough for a free business class ticket for just $2000 in spend. Now this is if you just buy things for yourself or gifts for others. I did not do that!

What I did was this. I found that they sold  SAMSUNG GALAXY TAB 10.1’s  for $499.99. I also got a 9v battery for 99 cents. I then resold all 10 of the TAB’s on eBay in one day. My cost to sell them including my eBay, Paypal and s&h fee’s to get them out the door was a loss of $70 per order. Thus, for $700 I earned 250,000 skymiles plus 10,000 Capital One points for the $5000 purchase cost (10×500).

I have had questions as to why I did not use my DELTA AMEX RESERVE credit card to earn 5x points per dollar spent at SKYMALL on this deal? The terms said you could not do both otherwise my DELTA card would have been the clear winner for this as well.

I have been told, and you can  read more about it here at FlyerTalk, that the deal will be coming back this week. So if you are going to take advantage of the promotion do some homework and start looking for thing to buy and keep or to resell that you can “lose” as little as possible on.

A few final thoughts about this deal. I wish I had gone “BIG” last time and gone for 1 million miles. It was very E-Z and cheap last time. This time the cost will be higher. I see $100-150 loss per item all-in. Still, if you lose as much as $200 per order, you are buying a business class low level mile ticket to Europe for just $800+ tax. Again, do some homework and see if this will be worth it to you when it goes live (not yet obviously)! – René

Just to be nice how about a chance for 2 more free drink/snack coupons for DELTA good until 31DEC2012 – just comment below(by 10PM EST) and I will randomly pick a winner and get them in the mail to you! PS – keep read’in the blog more giveaways all next week as well :-)

Do you use @DeltaAssist to contact DELTA on Twitter? You should!

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

I am NOT a fan of sites like Facebook, Myspace & similar sites and do not have, nor will I have,  a deltapoints.com presence on these type sites!

Twitter is a very different animal than the aforementioned sites and you should use it for DELTA contact (and other company’s as well like SPG etc.).

If you have never used twitter it is like texting on your phone, only on steroids. Delta has a help feature called @DeltaAssist. They are great and quick to help. Even if you do not have  status with DELTA  you can use @DeltaAssist and get top notch service. Have you ever had a flight issue and the line at the counter is 20 people deep or more? Just sit down and tweet to @DeltaAssist and let them fix your problem almost instantly.

So how do I use this great service with Delta?

1 – sign up with www.twitter.com
2 – search for DELTA and DeltaAssist ( also KLM_US,  KLM , AirFranceUS )
3 – once you have found them click “follow” them
4 – you will now send a tweet anyone can see so ask them to follow you
please for DM or Direct Messaging
5 – now you can pick messages and send them a private message!

You should get a response very quickly and if you have followed my advice by printing in advance all your flight options you can just ask to be moved to those flights. Then, once done, go to any of the “printers” around the airport, scan your OLD boarding pass (or skymiles card), and out comes the new one @DeltaAssist has done for you!

So give it a try next time and save yourself some stress and time.  – René

Wheelchair assistance when flying DELTA & schedule change rules

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

Before anyone blasts me about this, know that my mom is well over 80 years old, has a metal pin in her leg, and can only walk “so far”. Clear?

OK, now that that is out of way I can get on with today’s post. Knowledge is power when it comes to travel. With DELTA rules are always changing and that can drive you kinda nuts! Also, all the rules can be over ridden by anyone who can push the “big red candy like button” as “Ren and Simppy” would say.

Well what am I going on about you may ask. I hope you remember my blog post from the other day about booking low level award tickets:

See NOV 19th post here

Now why do I bring this up. Well my mom does get a bonus for being 80+ and having requested a wheelchair. The DELTA rules say a minimum connection time is 30 min domestic and 90 for an international gateway. This is UNLESS you are in a wheelchair. In that case you must ADD 30 minutes to those totals.

So, if you are in need of wheelchair assistance, you get even more time to help out with your schedule change rule. The next time someone tells you to “break a leg”, maybe it can help you in some small way. Who knows, you may even be better by the time you fly and not end up needing the wheel chair assistance by the time you fly. If that is the case be sure to call and cancel the request for that at least 1 week before your trip!

Happy flying! – René

Guide for BUMPING on DELTA airlines+ FREE SKYCLUB 1 day pass giveaway!

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

I have been told by those who fly UNITED that you can ask at check-in to be put on the list and all the way along your route if they need you on any of your segments they will have you on the BUMP list.

With DELTA it is not that E-Z. In fact, boarding organization is not one of DELTA’s strong suits. But paying you for bumps is very nice most of the time. Regionals pour out $400 vouchers like water I have found. Mainline jets can play around with the price but $300-400 is the norm. On international $800 and up is what you can expect (yes I know about the new rules this year for bumps, but we are NOT talking involuntary bumps but volunteering). Suspended Travel FAQs at DELTA website

I have had flights were I volunteered at check-in on a regional jet, then the same agent later runs the desk, the flight is oversold, and they take some else who just walks up when I had asked before anyone at check-in!

So, if you want to BUMP, tell everyone along the way. At check-in and at the gate. One tip I can share is that you print TWO copies of your boarding pass for each flight. Then, just tell the gate agent to HOLD ON to your pass just in case they need you (after all you have your extra one).

Also never ever trust the DELTA seat map as a check to see if the flight is really oversold (I missed out on a $2000 bump for an oversold international flight sitting up in the SKYCLUB looking at delta.com seatmap). Until the agents are working the flight, you can not be completely sure of the real numbers. As blogged about before, when you do give up your seat, work it for the best flights, seats, and maybe more vouchers when you have to stay overnight.

On a side note, and I am in NO WAY suggesting you invest in DELTA stock (I sure am not) this article does tend to show our DELTA flights will be more and more full over the short term and give us more chances to bumps!

Happy “bumportunities” – René

What will DELTA do for you when… + PGA TOUR pin drawing

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

In the summer it storms. In the fall it’s fog and wind. In the winter it is snow. In the spring it rains. Lions and Tigers and bears Oh my! Why fly!

We all know things will go wrong when we fly so what can we expect our beloved DELTA to do for us. The stock answer is if it is weather – nothing, nada, zip & zilch.

But this is not really true. So here are some tips for weather and more:

1) If you are stuck overnight and DELTA will not provide a room, ask them to call and book the room for you under the DELTA rate or under the “distressed traveler” rate and then you pay a much lower rate for the room, sometimes even the DELTA rate!

2) Or let’s say you give up your seat for compensation and take a bump on the last flight of the day and DELTA is willing you put you up at the “Motel 6″ (kidding but you get my point). Now you must ask for this BEFORE they print the voucher where they are going to put you up. If you don’t like the choices they offer, why not say, “how about some extra vouchers for travel and I will get my own room!” Many times you will get another $100-300 each in ETV’s PER PERSON. Also be sure while you are at it to ask for some extra meal vouchers since you were so nice to give up your seat and help them out (they can all be used at one time). I do this in Atlanta and use my SPG points to say at the Westin ATL many times (order the Alaskan Halibut Steak, it is very good. It is fun to pay for your food with 3-10 $6 coupon vouchers).  The WESTIN hotel in ATL

3) While Delta does offer Bereavement fares, Bereavement link at DELTA, most of the time they are not so great. But, what I have found is last minute, like same day or next AM low level skymiles seats in coach can many times be found. Just REMEMBER that once you book a skymiles ticket inside 72hrs of flight you CAN NOT CHANGE it or the miles go bye bye (most of the time).

4) Bags. Have you ever had your bags delayed? What if you are going skiing in SLC the next day? Don’t despair DELTA cares and will fork over some cash so you can ski. Most of the time they will pay for rentals and will come up with a list of max prices they will give you for other rental items like gloves and thermals etc etc. The cheap stuff that you can not rent they will want you to TURN IN when you fly home if you want to get your money back (they give them to a homeless shelter btw). Look here for baggage info at DELTA website. The best thing to do if your clubs, or skis etc do not make it is talk to baggage claim at the airport and see what they will do. Know the rules, be NICE, and remind them this is your dream vacation and don’t want it ruined (sappy I know but be nice, it helps).

So there you are eveyone. DELTA will do lot’s for you if you know what to ask for and how to ask.

What to give away today? I have one more of the Kool DELTA PGA pins so leave a comment if you want it and I will have a random draw tonight at 10PM EST.

We have our winner of the PIN: Aleks

I guess not many want to win a DELTA pin?

☺☺☺ Time for my next credit card churn!☺☺☺ – I should net 300,000 points!

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

It is time for my next credit card churn! What is a churn, well if you read frugaltravelguy or many of the other blogs you will know we make millions of miles by every 90-120 days applying for credit cards all in one day called a churn. The plan at this point for me:

INK BOLD 50,000bonus points card

Citi ThankYou 50,000 40,000 point card

Hawaiian Airlines 35,000 point card (will become 70,000 Hilton points)

And for my bride, she will do

Business Gold Rewards Card® American Express 50,000 25,000 point card

Chase Sapphire Preferred® 40,000 point card

Hawaiian Airlines 35,000 point card (will become 70,000 Hilton points)

This should net us after the min spend on each card over 300,000 more points for the year and push us to the 2 million mark earned this year and a points total of about 2.2 million in our accounts. WOW!

If you are going to play this game please make sure you have a credit score over 700 and can take the short term hit to your credit rating. Remember your credit is one of your most important assets. If you do want to get some new cards, I thank you in advance for picking any of my links as a starting point so I get my commission ! (also act FAST if you are going to do the SAPPHIRE or INK BOLD cards as the 50,000 BONUS is set to go away on MONDAY) – René

My seat! DELTA what happened to my seat?

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

One sad thing about the current state of affairs with DELTA.com is the lack of info when an aircraft swap happens or slight time change or flight number change occurs on your itinerary.

Now you will not see this when you simply look at your flight LIST in your upcoming itinerary page:

DELTA website My Trips

But you must rather click on each one to expand it and see what it really looks like (this is just nuts).

As you can see I have a trip I need to have DELTA fix for me. Now, I strongly urge you, don’t click on ANYTHING – PERIOD! DELTA.com when it come to things like this very DELTA.dumb and there are many reports all over the web of itinerary just going bye bye when you click almost anything. In addition, when you later call DELTA for help, they say you have clicked CANCEL when you clearly did not!

So, I suggest you call DELTA, ask them to please “clean up” your itinerary, then BEFORE you hang up with the rep say, “let me just see if I can see what you see on DELTA.com” and make sure all is well for you. Then, and only then, you can you go into the record and look for the seats you had before or want. If your aircraft changed you can always look at Seat Guru here.

Now the ridiculously frustrating part of this is that as soon as they do “clean up” the record, you should expect very quickly an e-mail that there has been a change to your itinerary. Maybe “IT” could do this before we find it? Ah well.

Once again here is a chance for 2 more free drink/snack coupons for DELTA good until 31DEC2012 – just comment below(by 10PM EST) and I will randomly pick a winner and get them in the mail to you!

Travel the “right way” with DELTA + FREE SKYCLUB 1 day pass giveaway!

This post contains references to products from one or more of our advertisers. We will receive compensation when you click on links to those products. For an explanation of our Advertiser Disclosure, and advertiser partners, such as American Express, visit this page.

I want my blog to appeal to both new DELTA flyers and frequent flyers as well. This will be a hard act to balance and some days will slant more one way than the other.

Today I want to talk about how to travel on DELTA or any airline for that matter. Most people book flight with as little time in-between flights to lessen the travel pain and to maximize the time where you are going or to get to work ASAP. This is just wrong. Please don’t ever do it again (if you can)! Enjoy the travel experience and time off. How you say? How about this way.

I always “try” for 2-4 hrs between my flights. Travel is stress but it does not have to be so. For me the fun begins in planning a trip. I feel the excitement build thinking of where and when I am going. The “game” of looking at what flights can work (see Saturdays blog post). I check where my wife and I will stay for the least points and the best rooms. Cars, dinners etc etc. It’s all good and so much fun to plan.

If you have “all your ducks in a row” before you depart, you lessen your stress of travel. If you have 2-4 hrs between flights you can go to the SKYCLUB for time to decompress, relax, have a drink, free WiFi and even take a shower after a long flight. In Detroit you can call the Oxygen spa for a refreshing “chair massage” or more either pre or post flight. In Atlanta you have the XpresSpa. In Amsterdam there is one just under the International KLM lounge. And, since you have 2-4 hrs between flights, if you are delayed some way, you have time to make it thanks to your time buffer.

Link to the Xpresspa website

Link to the Oxygen Spa web site

Anther great way to remove stress is to look ahead for other routes if things do go wrong. It takes about 60 seconds to look on DELTA.com for all the flights from point A-B for your day (you do this by just starting to book a flight for your day / next day and print all the routes). This way, if you have to call, tweet or ask for help you know what is available and you can pick the best for you.

You may say, “wait this is work!” Yes – travel can be stress if you do not do the work first. But if you do, then travel can be fun and part of your day off. You may also say, “I have never been in a SKYCLUB lounge, how do I get in?” You can buy a day pass good for 24 hrs.

Link to Delta Website to buy 1 day pass

At FlyerTalk many who have SKYCLUB access will be happy to “guest” you in and you can stay as long as you like.

Link to FlyerTalk meet-n-greet

Many AMEX cards give you free access. Again, it takes some work but pays off in what you get back.

Link to where SKYCLUBS are

So next time you book a trip, make the trip part of the vacation and enjoy it. You are “off the clock” and fun time has begun.

And since we are talking about the SKYCLUB today – post a comment below (by 10PM EST) and you will have a chance to win ONE – FREE  DAY  PASS to any DELTA SKYCLUB!
